The first bee rescue of 2016

cluster

We got a call to our bee rescue hotline on Sunday asking us to come remove a swarm that had landed in a South LA hedge. It was our first of the year and I forgot how fun it is.

We brushed them off the hedge and into a box to bring home:

bees in box

Bees are always really docile during a swarm capture, and its fascinating to watch them all march into the box once the queen gets in there. In fact, that’s how you know you have the queen.

Homeowner Marcas (above with Russell) was fascinated with the process and excited that he didn’t need to kill the bees. He’s considering learning how to keep bees himself!
